HISTORY:
Sniper! That dreaded cry caused men to scatter for cover and scan for a concealed marksman. Retaliatory barrages would follow and men might zig-zag forward to ferret out the sniper and wreak revenge. Sometimes a unit would be forced to hold position until either support or darkness restored movement.
While certain common traits were shared among belligerents, each had its unique methodology for selecting and training snipers and, as casualties were high, their replacements , drawn from hunters, competitive shooters, outdoorsmen, farmers and veteran soldiers, snipers used their skills to assert local battlefield dominance and instill a paralyzing fear in their enemy. They were sometimes admired but at other times reviled by their own comrades, because of the retaliation they drew.
THE BOOK:
Fully illustrated, this comprehensive narrative covers training the sniper’s battlefield role in the main theaters, and details of the specialist weapons and equipment, and machinery of war. Detailed, focused text is accompanied by hundreds of photographs, illustrations, and diagrams, providing a wealth of visual information for the historian, modeler and researcher.
