THE KIT:
Tamiya is an old prolific plastic model kit manufacturer, based in Japan. They make all manner of plastic model kit subjects in the popular scales.
This kit comes in a shrink-wrapped end-opening type box. I am no fan of this type of box, because invariably parts or the decal sheet will find their way past one of the end-flaps of the box to become lost forever. Give me a tray and lid type box any day of the week.
The box art shows a color illustration of 5 German soldiers and a dog, all standing around a metal field stove.
In the foreground is the German shepherd dog reclining. He is grey, with large brown spots.
Reading left to right, behind the dog, the first man is an officer. He wears an all winter-white jump-suit, black shoulder straps, black low shoes and a grey officer’s billed hat and field-grey gloves. He has documents in his left hand, holding them down. He has a pair of binoculars strung around his neck and is armed with a MP44 assault rifle, with ammo pouches for it on his belt. He is pointing to a wood board, with paperwork on it, that is being held by the second man to the right.
This second man wears an all winter-white jacket and camouflaged trousers in a splint pattern of grey, green and brown. His trousers are bloused into gators in the same camouflage, over low black shoes. He has black shoulder straps and wears dark-grey cloth gloves. He is armed with a Mauser 98K carbine slung on his back and has the wood board with documents on it in both hands, showing it to the officer.
Next is the narrow metal field stove with a long chimney on it.
The third man on the right of the foreground, also wears an all winter-white jacket, a field-grey overcoat, a white steel helmet, dark-grey cloth gloves, light grey trousers over low black shoes, a field-grey cloth side cap that is covered with a field-grey cloth hood and dark-grey cloth gloves.
In the background, behind the 3 men in the foreground, there are 2 more soldiers.
The one on the left wears a complete uniform that is in the camouflage pattern (already described). Its open collar shows that it is reversible to winter-white. He wears a dark-grey turtle-necked sweater, under the jacket. He has a field-grey cloth cap with a bill on his head and he also wears dark-grey cloth gloves and low black shoes. He is armed with a MG42 machine-gun slung over his left shoulder, with ammo pouches on his belt, black shoulder straps.
The last man on the right of the background is kneeling on his right knee. He wears a field-grey overcoat and steel helmet. He is armed with a Mauser 98K carbine, slung on his back. He has a black belt and shoulder straps, with field gear on the belt and pouches.
The figures are posed against one of Tamiya’s SIGNATURE all-white backgrounds that they use for the majority of their box arts.
The bottom of the box is the painting guide.

The kit holds two medium-grey parts-trees, a sheet of maps and other documents and a sheet of IMPORTANT information about the kit, in multiple languages, including English in 2 sealed clear cello bags.
There are no assembly instructions included in the kit. This is not a big problem as the parts are fairly easy to figure out how they go together. But, still a bad move Tamiya!
Trees are alphabetized as letter y and Z.
The small letter Y tree holds weapons and field gear (49 parts
