James Opie’s highly popular “Collecting Toy Soldiers (1987)” was a quarter of a century on this completely new companion, appeared. Updating the experience for the twenty-first century.
James now gives the reader the benefits of over forty-years participation as one of the world’s leading-authorities on toy soldiers, figures and models, and a lifetime as a collector. In this paperback edition “Collecting Toy Soldiers in the 21st Century” he continues to give fully illustrated and comprehensive advice on all aspects of collecting.
The main menus is an exposition of the thousands of different possibilities for pursuing individual-fulfillment. Guidance for every budget includes price trends, and pitfalls to avoid when buying or selling at auctions, shows, online or privately.
This informative and often-amusing anecdotes are provided from James's own involvement, and illustrates just how satisfying it can be to explore this blend of history, tradition, nostalgia and play, whether on the most grandiose scale or with the most limited of funds.
The hardback edition has stood the test of time, and in this edition, James includes a new preface summarizing the further changes that have taken place over the last ten years, showing that right now is more than ever a good time to take up or continue to enjoy toy soldiers.

This twelve-piece version lasted only 2 years, and is very rare. Set 1270 was a seven-piece band using the same figures, and was also available post-war.This set was sold in 2015 C&T auctioneers for 320 pounds.
This book is soft-cover of 208 pages in 6 ¼’ X 9 5/8” page format. It holds 221 color photos of Toy Soldier kits, describes them.
It describes sets showing figures from ancient Egypt up to now, in various types of molding and scales.
This book will be of great interest to individuals planning to get into this hobby.
