HISTORY:
Many people will be aware that the Islands were the only British territory occupied by the Germans in WWII. But, it is perhaps, because less generally known that they were fortified out of all proportion to their size, forming as they did a cornerstone of Hitler’s Atlantic Wall.
Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey and Sark were visited and occupied.
THE BOOK:
This book is of hard-cover of 257 pages (3 pages are blank) in 8 ¼” x 11 ¾” page format. It has a paper jacket that is held in place by two flaps to the book.
The cover art is on both the jacket and the book itself.
The front cover shows a nighttime color photo of the wartime Marinepielstaends and Messtellingun – the huge observation towers unique to the islands. This is the one to be seen at Les Landes, Jersey.
The back cover shows a black and white photo of the Fort George, Military Cemetery, Guernsey.
After the Battle and Then & Now books are both associated to Pen & Sword Ltd. All three firms are located in the UK.
The book contains 686 black and white photos.
There are 14 maps and many aerial photos of things. Buildings (shown during the war and today), many observation towers and fortifications, officers and infantrymen of the German army, civilians, vehicles and tanks (vehicle shown during the war and now), cemeteries etc.
There is a post card inserted in the book to mail and get more information about Pen & Sword books.
This is an interesting book about this subject. It will be of interest to both modelers and military historians alike.
