This is the newest title in Dr. Manasherob’s continuing series on Israeli Sherman Tank s.
Without giving too much away, the slow development of the M50 Sherman was the reason the IDF purchased Sherman’s equipped with the 76mm gun as the WW2 era 75mm gun was considered useless against the Centurion and T34 tanks coming into service in the Egyptian Army.
Part 1 covers the introduction of the M1 (M4A1 76mm Wet) Sherman into the IDF just before the 1956 Suez War, and has a narrative and many pictures that show the tanks being delivered and one company being hastily equipped and rushed into combat.
The rest of the book covers the formation and training of new units following the war as more M1’s became operational and the beginnings of the IDF evolution from an infantry centric doctrine to the armor centric force we all recognize today.
As with all of Dr. Manasherob’s works, the book is filled with photographs, profiles and 1/35th scale line drawings, showing the uniqueness of equipment in IDF service that make such interesting subjects to model.
Another great reference and highly recommended to anyone modeling Israeli Sherman Tanks.
