HISTORY:
Petropavlovsk was part of a seven-ship unit of the Nikolaev Type (project 1134B Berkut), which was a gas-turbine alternative design to the units of the project 1134A.
They were classified as large ASW (anti-submarine warfare), although they matched cruisers in size. The primary task of these ships was to search and destroy nuclear submarines in the oceanic zone, in particular, strategic missile submarines.
Due to the requirement of high autonomy and long cruising range, the ships were equipped with a new type of engine in the COGOG (combined gas or gas) system. It was comprised of two gas turbine units driving two seperate shaft lines.
Each of the two units consisted of two peak power turbines (20,000 HP) with a two-speed reduction gear. The advantage of the gas turbine was its shorter activation time and greater acceleration. It was also assumed that it would be smaller and more economical than the traditional steam turbine.
In fact, it turned out to be a complicated and expensive construction, and more importantly, quite unreliable.
THE BOOK:
Kagero is based in Lublin, Poland.
This book comes in a re-sealable clear cello envelope.
The cover art shows the Petropavlovsk's side view split in 2 sections over a line drawing of it's interior, against a dark background. The ship is overall grey with a white hull no 461.
The book contains 2 color profiles, 66 black and white line drawings of the ship, it's launches and helicopters in 1/100, 1/200 and 1/50 scales.
There are 2 large loose plans measuring 23 1/2" x 15 1/2" and folded twice to fit the book.
One plan has a port, starboard and top view of the ship in 1/200 scale.
The reverse side has more black and white line drawings of these same views in 1/200 scale.
The other plan has 3 side-views of the hull and deck in 1/200 scale.
This is one neat book and will be of interest to modelers and naval enthusiasts and historians alike.
Recommended.
