By 1942 the Nazi leadership had decided that the Jewish ghettos across occupied Poland should be liquidated with Warsaw’s being the target, processed in phases.
In response the left-wing Jewish Combat Organization (ZOB) and right-wing Jewish Military Union (ZZW) formed and began training, preparing defenses and smuggling in arms and explosives.
The first Warsaw Ghetto Uprising began in April 1943. Although this time the Red Army was closing the city and with liberation apparently imminent, the 40,000 resistance fighters of the Polish Home Army launched a second uprising.
For 63 days, the insurgents battled their oppressors on the streets, in ruined buildings and cellars. Rather than coming to their aid, the Russians waited and watched the inevitable slaughter.
The Gallant, but tragic struggle is brought to life in this superb collection of photographs, half of which were drawn from the album compiled for none other than Heinrich Himmler, entitled Warschauer Afstand 1943.
THE BOOK:
Pen & Sword Books is based in the UK.
This book is soft-cover of 191 pages in 7 ¼” x 9 ½” page format. Three pages are blank.
The cover art shows 5 black and white wartime photos.
The largest photo, at the top, shows 3 female fighters, from the Polish Battalion “Parasol”, sharing cigarettes in Werecka Street, North Srodmiescie. One female has a bandaged head wound and on her hat is a white parasol unit insignia.
At the bottom of the cover, the 1st photo on the left shows civilians on the streets of Warsaw. The 2nd photo to the right shows SS troops arresting the Jewish department heads of the Brauer armaments factory. The 3rd photo to the right shows a German Pak 35/36 anti-tank gun crew manhandling their gun through Warsaw. The 4th and last photo shows German soldiers advancing through rubble in Warsaw.
There are 3 more black and white wartime photos on the back cover. The 1st one on the left shows German policemen operating an Sd.Kfz.2 radio command car during the initial stages of the uprising. The photo in the center shows a “Goliath” tracked mine, or Leichter Landungstrager (Goliath Light Charge Carrier, Sd.Kfz. 302) and its crew .The photo on the right shows a captured German Panther tank, that was captured by the Armoured Wacek Platoon of Battalion Zoska, with 6 Polish infantrymen atop it.
The book contains 171 black and white wartime photos. There are no color ones.
The pictures show all the death, destruction and atrocities that were perpetrated on Warsaw by the Nazi’s.
This book will be moderately interesting to modelers, but more so to military historians.
