HISTORY:
When HMS Dreadnought was commissioned into Britain’s Royal Navy in 1906, this revolutionary “All-Big-Gun” warship transformed the tactics of naval warfare as much as it reshaped international relations. Powered by steam turbines, heavily armoured and equipped with ten 12in guns mounted in five turrets, Dreadnaught was like no other warship then on the high seas.
Such was its significance that it sparked a frenetic international naval arms race , as world powers sought to emulate and improve on the design, creating the class of ships we know today as “Dreadnoughts”. For the next three decades, dreadnought battleships and their successors , the “Super-Dreadnoughts”, dominated the waves, with Germany, the United States, Japan, Russia and other nations vying to build their own all-big-gun warships.
The dreadnoughts and super-dreadnoughts would come to blows in earnest during World War I, notably at the Battle of Jutland – the greatest clash of naval firepower in history.
THE BOOK:
Casemate Publishers is predominantly a distributor of other-companies books. However, this book is by Casemates themselves.
It is hard-bound of 228 pages in 8 ¼” x 11 ¾” page format. (4 pages are blank).
The cover shows 2 black and white photos of the Dreadnought and one color one.
The back cover shows a 4 more black and white photos.
The one at the top is the Dreadnought. The second one down shows its turret firing. The third one, on the left at the bottom, shows the crew of the Dreadnaught sitting on the foredeck. The last photo shows the Dreadnaught passing under a steel girder bridge on a river.
It contains 156 black and white photos. These include officers and crewmen.
There are 17 color photos, 14 color illustrations, 3 color side profile illustrations of the Dreadnought that has white sides with a red bottom, 2 of it with grey sides and red bottom (one is a 2-view), 44 line-drawings, 3 illustrations of equipment, 2 data lists and 4 posters.
At the end of the book there are 2 pages of FURTHER READING and 4 pages of INDEX.
The last page shows 4 black and white cover arts of other Casemate books:
U.S. Aircraft Carriers 1939-45
British Fighter Aircraft of WWI
German Tank Destroyers
Sherman, the M6 Tank in WWII
This is a neat book about Dreadnoughts and Super-Dreadnoughts. It will be of interest to modelers who plan on building one and to naval historians and researchers alike.
I sincerely wish to thank Casemate Publishers for this review sample. All Casemate book titles can be viewed on their website at:
