HISTORY:
This field kitchen was used extensively by the German Army to prepare meals for soldiers during World War II. It was drawn by two or four horses, and was used mainly for non-mechanized troops, such as the infantry.
It was composed of a limber, loaded with food and emergency rations, and a trailer, which functioned as a cooker. The cooker consisted of a large-sized cooking stove, installed with a sauce-pan in the center and a coffee-maker beside it. One unit of the field kitchen could provide enough food for 108 to 220 soldiers in the field.
Tamiya is an old prolific plastic model kit manufacturer based in Shizuoka, Japan. They manufacture all manner of plastic model subjects in the popular scales.
The kit came in a shrink-wrapped tray and lid type box.
The cover art shows a color illustration of a field kitchen being drawn by two horses, posed against one of Tamiya’s SIGNATURE all-white backgrounds, that they use for the majority of their box arts.
The field kitchen is overall Panzer-grey, with spoked wood wheels. Both horses that are pulling it are both overall brown with white for-heads. The horse on the left has white hair on the bottoms of its legs.
The upper right corner of the box art says: 1/35th scale military miniature series no. 103. With a figure and two horses. Ready to assemble-precision model. Kit modeling skills helpful if under 10 years of age.
One side panel of the box shows a color side view of the field kitchen, with 3 horses in front of it. They are done as all white, black and brown. This is followed by a one-paragraph history of the kitchen and Tamiya’s address in Shizuoka, Japan.

The other side panel begins with a color illustration of the top of the field kitchen being towed by a white and a brown horse. This is followed by MODEL PARTICULARS: This is a 1/35th scale precise plastic model of the German field kitchen which was widely used by the German Army for supplying rations to troops in the battlefield. A figure of a soldier driving, and two horses reproduced in the position of drawing the wagon are included in the kit. The driver figure can be placed in the position of holding the reins with both hands of of raising a whip with one hand. The limber and the trailer are detachable. The lid of the saucepan on the trailer can be assembled in either an open or closed position. Accessories, such as food containers and canteens, are supplied in the kit..
This is followed by color illustrations of pots, a gas lamp, bucket, soup ladle, canvas sack and a milk jug. All of which are said to be included in the kit.

The thin white sheet of plastic is supposed to be used to make reins out of, using patterns in the instructions for cutting it into strips.
The instructions consist of a single-sheet, printed on both sides, in 7 ¼” x 20 ½” format.
The face side begins with a black and white photo of the model made up. Over the history of the field kitchen, READ BEFORE ASSEMBLY instructions and 3 assembly steps for the cooker and limber.
The reverse side shows the patterns for cutting the reins from the thin white plastic sheet and 6 instructions for assembly of the 2 horses and their reins a stirrups. Sheet is folded 3 times to fit the box.
This is a great start on a diorama for sure. Great detail.
I earlier did a review of Tamiya’s kit of only the kitchen, without the horses, but with 4 cook figures. It is in the wheeled vehicles section here:
