Review of The Men Inside the Metal
The British A.F.V. Crewmen in W.W.2, Vol. 2 Author: Dick Taylor
MMP (Mushroom Model Publications) is based in the UK. All their books are printed in Sandomierz, Poland by Stratus publications in English. Stratus also does their own books in both English and Polish.
This new book came from Stratus in a bubble pack lined envelope.
The book is the second volume in a series of two. It completes the story of the uniforms and equipment of British and Commonwealth tank and AFV crew, 1939-1945. The evolution of uniforms, and the variations in actual use on all fronts, are described, as is the personal equipment of the AFV crews. The advantages and drawbacks of all the designs are discussed, in the context of actual front-line operational experience.
It is soft-cover, 124 pages long in 8 ½” X 12” page format. The pages are printed on slick-coated stock.
The book is illustrated with many photos. 137 of them are black and white and 7 are in color. The majority of them are pictures of crewmen. A few of them show vehicles.
Chapter one: INDIVIDUAL REGIMENTAL INSIGNIA shows color illustrations of 125 badges, shoulder patches and side caps worn by British and Commonwealth AFV crews.
Chapter two: THE CREWMEN – TRAINING THE TANK SOLDIER & CREW RESPONSIBILITIES
Chapter three: LIVING ON AN ARMORED FIGHTING VEHICLE, Tactical and non-tactical movement, Resting and sleeping, Washing and cleaning, Relaxing and Food and drink (showing pictures of these food and drink containers)
References and bibliography are at the back of the book.
I recommend this book to WWII historians and AFV enthusiasts.
I want to thank Dr. Roger M. Wallsgrove, Editor-in-Chief of MMP and the folks at Stratus sincerely for this review copy.
