In 1981, the FIA announced a new regulation setting for group A, B, C, and group A was most likely to be compared to production commercial cars and competed in performance.
The base car was subject to homologation with four or more seats in mass production commercial cars. Since the remodeling range is strictly limited and the appearance was almost no different from the commercial production cars which were familiar to fans, its success in races was directly connected to the high-performance range, so that the promotion effect could be expected. Many manufacturers were putting effort into the car development . International races were held around the world and gained great popularity.
The Volvo in Sweden was also quick to respond to Group A regulations. The Volvo 240, one of the main models of the time, was used as a base car and developed to be qualified to the Group A regulation. The Volvo 240 series was produced from 1974 to 1993, and in 1981 the Turbo models joined the lineup.
In 1983, 500 “Evolution” models were built to satisfy production requirements to qualify for the FIA Group A regulations and became a direct base car of the Group A race model.
The engine was equipped with a Garrett AiResearch made 5 cylinder inline OHC 2141cc turbocharger with inter-cooler boost system. In addition to improving engine control, the Volvo 240T adopted a technology called turbotraction to inject water into the intake, and armed with the aluminum cylinder head, forging crankshaft, a K-Jetronic fuel injection system, which claimed to produce a power of 340 hp. The 240T weighed 1935kg, despite its boxy and un-aerodynamic appearance, gave an overwhelming run as a two door sedan body.
Since 1984, Volvo participated in races in earnest, but did not run the cars directly, instead entrusting the management of races to Eggerberger Motosport in Switzerland and Magnum Racing in Sweden. The Volvo 240T won the ETCC (European Touring Car Championship) in the 1985 season, and showed its speed against Austin Rovers and BMW’s with larger displacements through IPA Motorsport in DTM.
Renowned for its speed and the square body style, the Volvo 240T was called the “Flying Brick” by fans and rival teams. The R.A.S. Sport (Nordica sponsored) also participated in 1986. From the ETCC in the 1986 season, the Volvo 249T was active in the 24 hours of Spa. The Volvo 240T also came to enter TEC held Fuji Speedway race in 1986 an won the championship, and strongly impressed the Japanese motor sports.

THE KIT:
Platz is an old prolific model company base in Shizuoka, Japan. They manufacture all manner of model subjects in the popular scales. I have not ever seen the name NuNu on any other kits that I have reviewed here in the past. I assume they are an new associate of Platz’s ?
This kit comes in a tray and lid type box that is not shrink-wrapped.
The cover art shows a Volvo 240T on a race track. It is overall chalk-white, with an airfoil on its deck.
It has 4 vertical stripes, in red, navy-blue and light blue down the side of the car that turns at the bottom into horizontal position and cross below the door.
Above the horizontal stripes is a large black “1 NORDICA”. Below the horizontal stripes, on the door sill, is the Champion logo, followed By white “VOLVO EUROPE DEALER TEAM”.
On the sides of the rear fender there is Black “VOLVO” over “IN SPORTS” and the Pirelli logo. Large black “1 NORDICA” is repeated atop the hood. On a white edge at the top of the windshield “VOLVO IN SPORTS” is repeated.
Across the front bumper is white “BILSTEIN” followed by “PERELLI” , “ROS SPORT” and again “PERELLI” and “BILSTEIN”.
Across the bottom edge of the box art is Volvo’s permission to use their name on the kit.
One side panel of the box begins with a suggested paint color listing of Mr. Color brand hobby paints, followed by: This is a 1/24th scale unpainted plastic model assembly kit that reproduces the Volvo 240 Turbo developed by Volvo for Group A touring car races. It finishes to be 200mm in length (almost 8”), 70mm in width (almost 3”),
It realistically reproduces the “Flying Brick” boxy body style and details such as rear wing. The interior parts, such as roll bar, are also reproduced in detail. Under-surface of the chassis is in 3 dimensions. Marking is for car no. 1 of the RAS Sport race, driven by Johnny Cecotto and Thomas Lindstrom, which won the race in Hockenheim, one of the European Touring Car Championships in 1986.
Platz’s telephone and FAX number and their street address is provided.
Some parts may be too sharp, more caution and care needed for families with infants. When using adhesives and paints, do not use near fire to avoid flammability. All said in Japanese and English.
Made in Macau.
