THE BOOK:
Greenhill Books is located in the UK.
This book is hard-bound, with a paper jacket. It has a ribbon attached to it, that serves as a page marker. Nice touch.
The cover art on the jacket is a color photo of Rommel talking to 5 German officers standing in the desert by a halftrack that has a driver in it. Rommel and the men all wear field-grey uniforms. Two of the men wear tan trousers. Rommel wears jodhpur pants, bloused into high black jack boots. He is bare headed. The officers all wear cloth field caps with bills. One officer has a bunch of white paper under his left arm. There is a folding chair in the foreground.
This book is a striking collection of more than 250 rare color photographs from WWII. Masterfully charts the path of commander Erwin Rommel and his Afrika Korps during the German Army’s North African campaign.
Images are taken from acclaimed photo collector Ian Spring’s extensive PIXPAST Archive and accompanying text by renowned military historian Anthony Tucker Jones.
This extraordinary book takes you on a visual journey through North Africa, during the Second World War, following the path of Erwin Rommel and his Afrika Korps.
Taken from Ian Spring’s archive of original colour photographs, dated between 1936 and 1946, this unique collection includes fascinating colour images of German, Italian and Arab soldiers, weaponry, tanks and aircraft, as well as rare pictures of the people and landscapes of North Africa.
The Arab soldiers are also seen as cavalry units, riding camels. There are civilians shown too and Luftwaffe pilots.
Aircraft shown are the Dornier Do-24 flying boat, the Heinkel He-59 float plane, an Italian CRDA Cant Z-506, the Blohm und Voss BV-222 large flying boat, the Junkers Ju-52, the Fieseler F-156 Storch, a Bf-109, a Junkers Ju-97 Stuka dive-bomber, a Heinkel Hs-126, and a crashed Junkers Ju-88.
There is a photo of ancient Roman ruins, villages, harbors and tent camps.
This is one neat album of colour photos of things during the Afrika Korps campaign.
